The composer’s approach towards traditional music is neither a sentimental nor simplistic one. Erkoreka’s accordion concerto Akorda (1998/9) is a stand-off between the ‘folkloric’ and ‘art’ music in which the solo instrument, with its capability to evoke both sound worlds, acts as middle man. The piece begins with the accordion imitating the sound of the Scottish bagpipes. Later, as the number of drones increases, it comes to resemble the Italian zampogna and quotes elements of a Giovanni Gabrieli canzona, which is already present in parts of the orchestra. At the end of the piece however, although they have moved closer together, the two worlds remain unreconciled. Next
