"As versatile as the Kronos Quartet and smoother than the Brodsky Quartet, The Smith Quartet have edged ahead of their competitors in contemporary chamber music' The Independent 2007. Classic Smith Quartet programmes featuring many of the quartet's recent highlights including their acclaimed recent release of Philip Glass's Complete String Quartets for Signum Classics. Many new Smith Quartet commissions appear including Howard Skempton's award winning Tendrils, Andrew Poppy's Hatch, fast becoming a Smith Quartet favourite, Joe Cutler's Folk Music (Daithi's Dumka) premiered at Huddersfield Festival in 2007, Donnacha Dennehy's take on a 14th Century dance and Graham Fitkin's Servant from their Good Medicine album. The Smith Quartet have had a long association with Steve Reich performing Different Trains on BBC 2's documentary Auschwitz, a Musical Memorial and bad boy of British music Steve Martland makes a welcome return with his epic Patrol which the Smith Quartet recorded on Argo Decca.
